Stories abound about the pain and suffering of going through dental implant surgery. The drills, the hours and hours in the dentist’s chair, the pain afterwards. Well, let us at Cheltenham Dental Spa put the record straight: getting dental implants in Cheltenham is really not that bad. If it was, no one would have it done, and in fact, this method of tooth replacement is often people’s first choice for replacing teeth.

Your gums

Yes, we do have to cut a flap in your gums, so that we can get at the bone and put the dental implants in Cheltenham in.

The drilling

Yes, there is drilling. We have to use the drill to create new artificial sockets in which to put the dental implants. We take our time over this, for sure, but not because we love to see you suffer. Quite the opposite in fact.

We drill carefully, starting off with a very small drill to create a hole. And then we gradually make it bigger with wider drills. We do this because if we went in straight away with a wide drill, we could crack the jawbone. We also take our time because we don’t want the friction from the drill to overheat the bone and kill off the bone cells. We also flush the area with lots of cool water to keep the temperature down.

The pain

People say that having dental implants in Cheltenham is like having root canal therapy, but we think that’s wrong. That means drilling into an infected tooth. We are drilling into healthy, strong bone. And the jawbone has far fewer nerve endings than teeth, along which to transmit pain signals to the brain.

And actually, you don’t have to feel any of the pain because local anaesthetic will be enough to numb the area. You don’t have to spend the treatment hyped up on anxiety either. If you think you are going to find it hard to relax, you can have either oral or intravenous sedation.

Afterwards

We would like you to spend 24 hours in bed, and eat a liquid diet for a week, but you should be able to get by on over-the-counter painkillers quite easily.
